Lux Aurumque--music for the winter holidays: The program's name is from Edward Esch's poem Lux Aurumque as set to music by Eric Whitacre, a daring piece with shimmering chromatics. Other pieces include two settings of the Magnificat, one by Baroque master Johann Pachelbel and another by the influential Arvo Pärt. We offer Bach's Christmas cantata Uns ist ein Kind geboren as the centerpiece to the concert as well as a selection of traditional carols, hymns, and songs. We will conclude by singing Franz Gruber's "Silent Night" with all who attend. Our friend Michael Rheault will join us on organ and keyboard.• January, 2011 Together in Song, Springfield, Mass.
See and hear our live performance of "Lux Aurumque" by Eric Whitacre and "Deep River" arranged by Norman Luboff which featured bass soloist Carey Lape in WGBY's broadcast of our performance.• Tuesday, April 19, 2011 Our Lady of the Valley Church, Easthampton, Mass., 7:00 p.m.
• Friday, April 22, 2011 St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Longmeadow, Mass., 8:00 p.m.
Tenebrae--the Passion of Christ: Schola Nova continues its tradition of performing for the penitential and meditative Holy Week Tenebrae service. Tenebrae is composed of readings and musical selections about the events during the week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday that led to the crucifision of Jesus. Music from this year's service will be from Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere" and "Improperia, the Reproaches on Good Friday" by Tomás Luis de Victoria. Note: this is a religious service, it is not a concert.• Friday, May 20, 2011 Old First Church, Court Square Springfield, Mass., 7:30 p.m.
• Friday, June 3, 2011 Our Lady of the Valley Church, Easthampton, Mass., 7:00 p.m.
• Sunday, June 5, 2011 Church of the Epiphany, Wilbraham, Mass., 2:00 p.m.
Deep River--choral classics to stir the spirit: Schola Nova will perform its final three concerts of the season in our home venue, Our Lady of the Valley Church, and two new venues for us, Church of the Epiphany in Wilbraham and the historic Old First Church in downtown Springfield. Schola will sing two works with strings and keyboard--Pachebel's "Magnificat", and Mozart's "Missa Brevis", K. 49 which he wrote at the ripe age of 14! Schola will also perform several works a cappella including Pärt's "Magnificat", Algirdas Martinaitis' "Alleluia", "Lux Aurumque" by the American Eric Whitacre, and several spirituals including Norman Luboff's stunning arrangement of "Deep River" featuring the solo voice of basso Carey Lape.
